This feature isn't available in Dashlane yet.
You'll soon be able to create and access your Dashlane account without a Master Password. We call this feature "passwordless authentication" for Dashlane. You "authenticate" yourself—or prove your identity—without entering a password.
Passwordless authentication is highly secure and makes accessing Dashlane easier than ever before. You no longer need to create and remember a complicated Master Password to safely manage your online life.
How does passwordless authentication work?
When you create a Dashlane account, we ask you to enter a login email address and Master Password. With passwordless authentication, you'll also have the option to skip the Master Password and enter a PIN instead.
Your PIN is device-specific, which means it only works on the device used to set it up. After you set up passwordless authentication on one device, you can add other devices to your account using a QR code.
More about adding devices with a QR code
With passwordless authentication, you can log in to your Dashlane account with a PIN or with biometrics if you've set it up. Biometrics uses your fingerprint or face to prove your identity. You're able to log in without a Master Password because you're using something you have and something you know or are—your device and a device-specific PIN or biometrics.
You may find you can log in quickly and securely with biometrics and only need to use your PIN if your biometrics fail.
Is passwordless authentication secure?
Passwordless authentication is easy and convenient, but also more secure than previous ways of protecting and accessing your account. Currently, you prove your identity when logging in to an account by providing something that only you know—a password. But passwords come with important risks:
- Cybercriminals can steal your password in security breaches or phishing attacks
- Others can potentially guess your password, especially if it's simple
- Difficult passwords can be hard to remember and cause you to lose access to your accounts
Passwordless authentication gets rid of many of these problems. You access your account with biometrics or a device-specific PIN, which is easy to remember. So you're unlikely to get locked out and lose data. But your PIN only works when you enter it on the device where you set it up. So no one can get into your account without both your device and PIN, which makes accessing your account illegally much more difficult.
Is passwordless login for Dashlane the same as passkeys?
Our passwordless login solution is independent of our passkeys solution.
We'll offer passwordless login for Dashlane as an alternative to logging in to Dashlane with a Master Password soon. Passwordless login is optional, and you may continue to use your Master Password to log in to Dashlane.
Dashlane also offers a passkey solution that's ready to help you access websites and online services. Passkeys will be available to our customers when major websites adopt passkeys.
What if I lose my phone or computer?
If you lose a device where you've set up passwordless login for Dashlane, the PIN prevents others from accessing your account, at least temporarily. You'll want to revoke access to your account for that device as soon as possible. Revoking access means removing the device's permission to use your Dashlane account. You can still use Dashlane on other devices.
You can still access and protect your account even if you lose access to all the devices. When passwordless login becomes available, you'll have the option to set up an "account recovery key" so that you can recover your account without losing any data.
