Get started with the Dashlane web app and extension Expand Sections

The web app and extension are a highly secure way to store and use your data.

To access your data in the web app, you have to "authenticate" the device and browser you're using. You need to prove that you're the one trying to get access to your Dashlane account.

To authenticate your device and browser, enter your Master Password and a temporary code that we send to the email you used to set up Dashlane. No one—not even Dashlane employees—can access your data in the web app without these two pieces of information.

Important: The most important thing you can do to keep your account secure is to create a strong Master Password. You want a Master Password that is long, unique, difficult to guess, and easy to remember. No one at Dashlane knows your Master Password, and we can't send you your password if you forget it.

1. Find the Dashlane extension in the Chrome Web Store.

2. Select Add to Chrome.
3. Select Add extension.

Pin the extension to your Chrome toolbar

Pinning the extension ensures that Dashlane always stays visible.

To see the Dashlane extension in your Chrome toolbar:

1. In your browser toolbar, select the Extensions icon, shown as a puzzle piece.
2. Select the Pin icon next to the Dashlane extension. The Pin icon turns blue, and the Dashlane D shows up next to the search bar.

Install the Chrome extension in Microsoft Edge

Because Microsoft Edge is a Chromium browser, you can also use the Dashlane Chrome extension with Edge.

1. Select the 3-dot menu in the toolbar in Microsoft Edge.
2. Select Extensions in the list.
3. Select Manage extensions in the pop-up that opens. Turn on Allow extensions from other stores and then select Allow.

   

4. Find the Dashlane extension in the Chrome Web Store.

5. Select Add to Chrome.
6. Select Add extension to confirm you want to add the extension to your browser.

To see the Dashlane extension in your Edge toolbar:

1. In your browser toolbar, select the Extensions icon, shown as a puzzle piece.
2. Select the Show in toolbar icon, shown as an eye with a slash through it, next to the Dashlane extension. The slash disappears from the eye, and the Dashlane D shows up next to the search bar.

2. Select Get Dashlane for Firefox, and then Continue to installation. Then select Add.
3. Choose whether you want to Allow this extension to run in Private Windows, and then select Okay.

To see the Dashlane extension in your Edge toolbar:

1. In your browser toolbar, select the Extensions icon, shown as a puzzle piece.

1. Select Safari in Safari's menu bar and then select Safari Extensions.
2. Search for "Dashlane" and select the download icon for Dashlane - Password Manager.
3. Quit and reopen Safari.
4. Select Safari in the menu bar again and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version. We'll ask you to turn on the Dashlane extension if you haven't already.
5. In the Extensions tab, select the checkbox for Dashlane. Clear the checkboxes for any older versions of Dashlane. Close the pop-up.
6. Select the Dashlane D icon in the Safari toolbar and then select Open the app. Enter your Master Password if asked.

When you create a new Dashlane account, you need to provide a login email address and then create your Master Password.

Login email address

Your login email address is the address you use to create your Dashlane account and the address you use to log in to your Dashlane account. After you've created your account, you can't change your login email address because the address is your Dashlane username. You'll always use the same email address to log in to your Dashlane account.

You also have a contact email address. Dashlane automatically uses your login email address as your contact email address, but you can provide a different contact email address. Dashlane sends codes and tokens to your contact email address when you verify your identity or when you authorize a new device. You must always have access to the inbox for your contact email address.

Your Master Password

When you create a Dashlane account, you need to create a Master Password. Your Master Password is the only way to unlock your Dashlane account. Only you know your Master Password, and your password is never shared with or stored by Dashlane.

Warning! If you forget your Master Password, you can lose the data you’ve stored in Dashlane. To ensure the security and privacy of your data, we don't have a traditional "reset password" process like other apps. No one at Dashlane knows your Master Password, and we can't send you your password if you forget it.

Create your account

1. Select the Dashlane D in your browser’s toolbar or extensions menu, and select Create an account.
2. Enter the email address you want to use for your account.
3. Create the Master Password for your Dashlane account. Keep your Master Password a secret, and don't send your password over the internet.

Tip: Worried you might forget your Master Password? Download and log in to the Dashlane mobile app. Then you'll have access to Master Password reset so you can regain access to your account with biometrics, like your fingerprint or face.

1. Select the Dashlane D icon in your browser’s toolbar.
2. Enter the email address you use for Dashlane and your Master Password.
3. In the extension pop-up, select Open the web app.

For most browsers, the Dashlane D is green when you're logged in. To access the web app, select the Dashlane D and then Open the web app.

For most browsers, the Dashlane D is orange when you're not logged in. You need to log in first to access the web app.

For Safari, the Dashlane D is dark gray when you're logged in and light gray when you're not logged in.

Note: In the recent versions of Safari, you can choose the colors of your extensions in the appearance settings of your Apple device. Whatever color you choose, the D icon is a dark shade when you're logged in to Dashlane and a light shade when you're not.

If you previously stored your passwords and login details in a browser or a different password manager, you can import your data directly into Dashlane instead of manually entering it.

Import your data into Dashlane

You can also add passwords one by one:

1. From the Get started page, select Add your first password as you browse, and a list of some popular websites to choose from appears.

   

2. Select the website you want to start with.
3. Select Open selected website. If you're already logged in to the website, log out. When you log in again, a pop-up appears and asks if you want to save to Dashlane.

   

4. Select Save. If Dashlane already has information saved for this site, you have the option to Replace the existing login info or to Save as new, which creates a new login for the website.
   

   

If you use Safari as your browser: Dashlane now uses macOS native autofill for the web app in Safari. For a better autofill experience, you must set up the alternative autofill solution. This solution lets Dashlane autofill your usernames and passwords but not other fields like your address, phone number, or payment information. To autofill all types of data, you must use Dashlane in another supported browser.

1. Select Try Autofill on the Get Started page.

2. Select Store personal info to continue. Dashlane asks you to enter basic details that websites might ask you for, such as your name, date of birth, and phone number.

   

3. Enter your information and select Continue.
4. Select Save and then Continue.

   

5. On the next screen, you can test Autofill. The Dashlane D appears in each field. Select one of the fields. In the pop-up, select the data you entered and Dashlane will autofill. Select Done.

   

You can add Dashlane to your mobile device from the Get Started page. This step is optional, and you can complete it anytime.

1. Select Get the mobile app.

   

2. On the next screen, scan the QR code with your mobile device.

3. After you scan the code, follow the steps on your mobile device to download and install the Dashlane app.
