This article has steps for turning on 2-factor authentication (2FA) for logins saved in your Dashlane account. You can turn on 2FA for important logins like bank accounts in any Dashlane app. After you turn on 2FA, you'll use 2FA to log in to that account everywhere you use Dashlane.
What's 2FA?
Use 2FA to log in to your Dashlane account
If you've turned on 2FA for a login and share that login using Dashlane's secure sharing feature, you also share your 2FA tokens for the login. The person you share with will see the tokens anywhere they use Dashlane.
Don't have a mobile device or prefer not to use one to set up 2FA and receive tokens? You can turn on 2FA and view tokens for logins stored in Dashlane using the web app in your computer browser.

If you don't have a mobile device or prefer not to use one to set up 2FA, you can use the web app instead.
Some websites and apps will require a mobile device to receive 2FA tokens, and you won’t be able to use this process. You also can't use this process with the Safari browser.
- In the web app, open the login you want to protect with 2FA.
- In the Login details section, select Set up 2FA token. You'll need to add a 2FA setup code that you find on the website for the login.
- Follow the steps to turn on 2FA on the website:
- Go to the security settings of the website. Security settings often appear in the “Logins and Security” or “Account security” section of your account settings.
- Turn on 2-factor authentication, which may also be called 2FA, 2-step verification, or 2-step authentication. The website might also use “code,” “security code,” or "OTP" instead of “2FA token.”
Depending on the website, you might not see the 2FA setup code initially. You might need to choose to accept your tokens by text or an authenticator app.
To get 2FA tokens in the individual login in the Dashlane web app, select the authenticator app option so that you can see the code to copy. You won’t need to use an authenticator app to complete the process. You’ll complete the process in the web app.
Some websites might offer a link to copy the setup code like “Can’t scan the barcode?” or "Can’t scan the QR code?” Select the link to display the setup code.
- Copy the setup code—a long string of alphanumerical characters provided by the website. The setup code might be referred to as a "manual setup code," "key," "authenticator key," or something else. If a QR code appears, you can disregard it as the QR code is used to set up 2FA on a mobile device.
- Paste the code in the login’s 2FA setup code box in the web app.
- Select Submit setup code at the bottom of the box.
- Close the login and open it again. The 6-digit 2FA token appears with a countdown icon. Each token is valid for about 30 seconds. The countdown icon shows when a new token will appear. Select the Copy icon, which is shown as two pieces of paper, to copy the token.
Note: If you receive an error message when using a 2FA token, wait until the next token appears and copy that token. Sometimes the token doesn’t appear long enough to complete the copy/paste action.
-
Return to the website to check if you need to enter one of the 2FA tokens from your login to finalize the setup. Be sure to copy your backup or recovery codes if provided.
Important: When setup is complete, the website often provides backup or recovery codes. Make sure you copy and save these codes in a secure location. You might need to use the codes in case you lose access to your 2FA tokens in the web app. Also, if you mistakenly turn off 2FA from the login before turning off 2FA on the website, you’ll need one of these codes to log in.
You can log out of the website and log in again to test your new extra layer of security.
Turn off 2FA in the web app for a login stored in Dashlane
Important: If you no longer need to protect a specific login, you can turn off 2FA for that login, but you must turn off 2FA on the website first.
- Go to the security settings of the website. Security settings often appear in the “Logins and Security” or “Account security” section of your account settings.
- Turn off 2-factor authentication, which may also be called 2FA, 2-step verification, or 2-step authentication.
- The website might ask you to enter one of your 6-digit 2FA tokens found in the login’s details in the web app.
- After you enter the 2FA token, you’ll receive a message on the website that you’ve turned off 2FA for this account.
- Log out of the website.
Return to the web app
- Open the login that you turned off 2FA for on the website.
- In the Login details section, select Remove 2FA.
- Select Save. 2FA tokens will no longer be generated for this login.
To test that the 2FA removal worked, log in to the website again. You should no longer need a 2FA token to complete the login process.
I removed 2FA from the login before I turned off 2FA on the website. What do I do?
If you removed 2FA from the login in the web app before you turned off 2FA on the website, you need to use a saved backup code to log in to the website. Because you turned off 2FA in the login, the generated 2FA tokens will no longer work, but the website will still require a token to log in. A backup code can replace the 2FA token required for login in this case.
- Select “Can’t get a security code?” or “Lost access to 2FA tokens?”
- Enter one of the backup codes that you saved when you turned on 2FA on the website.
- Log in and turn off 2FA on the website.
