2-factor authentication (2FA) is a way to add an extra layer of security to your online life by requiring two steps when you log in. With 2FA turned on, you're asked for your password as well as a token from an authenticator app or a verification code sent by email.
What makes 2FA secure?
When you log in to a website or app, you use your password to prove that you are who you say you are. This process is called "single-factor authentication" because you prove your identity in one step by providing something that only you know.
2-factor authentication (2FA) requires two steps:
- You enter your password.
- You confirm your identity by entering a token from an authenticator app or a verification code sent by email.
2FA adds security to your online life because, to access your logins, you need a password that only you know and access to a mobile device or email account that only you have.
Additionally, 2FA tokens and email codes are only valid for a limited period—anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours, depending on the type of 2FA you're using. Expired codes and tokens can't be used to access your account.
The email codes we send you when you sign in to Dashlane on a new device are a form of 2FA. We also have two types of 2FA that you can turn on to secure your data—2FA for logging in to your Dashlane account and 2FA for protecting logins stored in your Dashlane account.

Important: Due to changes in business priorities, we've discontinued the Dashlane Authenticator app as of May 13, 2024. The Dashlane Authenticator is a separate app used only for 2FA. You can still use all the features of the main Dashlane app to store and protect your data. You'll also still be able to use the main Dashlane app as an authenticator to protect logins stored in Dashlane with 2FA. If you had both the Dashlane Authenticator and the main Dashlane app on the same mobile device before May 13, you can still find your 2FA tokens in the Authenticator section of the main Dashlane app.
