You can quickly unlock Dashlane without having to type your Master Password. This article explains how to enable Finger Scanner/Fingerprint or a PIN code for selected Android devices.
- Enable Imprint in the Android settings
- Enable Finger Scanner/Fingerprint in the Dashlane application
First you need to make sure your device is equipped with a Fingerprint sensor that is currently supported by Dashlane. We support the Imprint fingerprint recognition feature currently available on most devices running Android 6.0 or above.
Note that we no longer support the Finger Scanner fingerprint recognition feature available on older Samsung devices. These include some Samsung devices running Android 5.0, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S5 & Note 4, despite the fact that they are running Android 6.0.
You also need to make sure that you are running the most recent version of Dashlane for your device. Check to see if there's any update available on the Play Store.
Lastly, you need to make sure that your device itself uses a lock-screen (PIN or fingerprint) in order to enable Dashlane's fingerprint authentication.
How it works
Finger Scanner/Fingerprint allows you to unlock your device and its apps. Instead of entering your PIN – or your Master Password if you did not enable PIN protection – to unlock Dashlane, Dashlane can read your fingerprint and unlock the app.
Of course, your Dashlane data goes on being encrypted with your Master Password. This means that after restarting your device, you will still be prompted to enter your Master Password to open Dashlane and decipher your data. In addition, you will also be asked to enter your Master Password every so often as a security measure, as well as to make sure that you remember it! (Your account data can only be unencrypted using your Master Password!)
This is why Finger Scanner/Fingerprint cannot replace your Master Password completely. You will still need to occasionally type your Master Password.
How to enable the feature
Enable Imprint in the Android settings
In order to enable the feature in Dashlane, you will first need to enable it in the Android settings.
In order to enable the feature on your Android device, please follow the instructions below to locate the setting:
- Open your phone's Settings and locate the Finger Scanner menu or the biometrics or security menu that contains it
- From this menu, follow the instructions onscreen to add new fingerprints
Enable Finger Scanner/Fingerprint in the Dashlane application
From the main menu, tap on Settings
Swipe the button to turn on Finger Scanner or Fingerprint.
Then follow our tutorial to enable the feature.
If you have any problems enabling it, disable Finger Scanner/Fingerprint in Dashlane, then disable and re-enable the feature in the Android settings. Then make sure that the PIN code lock is turned off in the Dashlane settings and turn Finger Scanner/Fingerprint on again in Dashlane.
Other advanced settings
You can find the settings listed below in the Settings menu along with the Fingerprint feature. We recommend that you consider enabling some together with the Finger Scanner/Fingerprint feature.
Autofill for Android apps
If you enable this feature, Dashlane will automatically log you in to the apps you have downloaded on your device. If you open an app and try to have Dashlane sign you in while your Dashlane account is locked, you'll be able to unlock it with Finger Scanner/Fingerprint. See more info here about autofill.
You can set a timer to your app so that it locks automatically after a certain period of inactivity. This is especially useful if your phone is stolen and you want to make sure no one can access your data. You can choose a time between 10 seconds and 10 minutes. After this time period, you will have to use Finger Scanner/Fingerprint to unlock it.
You could also disable this by selecting Never, but we discourage using this setting.
Lock on exit
If you've enabled this feature, then the app will automatically lock whenever you leave it (when going back to the home screen on Android, when switching between apps or when locking the screen) and require that you use Finger Scanner/Fingerprint to unlock it.
We recommend that you keep this setting on as it provides more security.
How to use the feature
Once Finger Scanner/Fingerprint has been set up, you will be able to use it instead of entering your PIN or Master Password when unlocking the app.
Simply hold or swipe your finger slowly and lightly on the home button of your device.
If Finger Scanner/Fingerprint fails to recognize your finger, you'll be asked to try again. After three unsuccessful attempts, you will need to enter your Master Password.
Your Master Password is your secret key to the data stored in your Dashlane account, that only you have access to. But instead of typing in a long, complex password every time you visit Dashlane on your Android device, you can set up a PIN code to unlock the app.
How to set up a PIN code
From the main menu, tap on Settings at the bottom of the page.
Tap the button to turn on the PIN code lock.
Then, you need to choose a four-digit number to use as your PIN code, and confirm it on the next screen.
After confirming your PIN code, you will also be offered the possibility to let your device remember your Master Password. This will prioritize PIN code unlock in the future.
This setting can be found in the menu along with the PIN code lock.
Please note that you will still periodically have to enter your Master Password instead of your PIN code when signing in to your Dashlane account for security reasons.
You can change your PIN code at any time in Settings by tapping on Change PIN code. Then, you can set a new set of four numbers to use as your new PIN code.
If you forgot your PIN, don't panic. Enter a false PIN three times and Dashlane will ask you for your Master Password in order to unlock the application. You will be able to disable/enable the PIN again and choose another code.
Why do I still need to enter my Master Password?
When you open Dashlane, you will always need to put in your Master Password in order to launch the app. This is because it is required to unencrypt your data. Your Master Password is neither stored in the application nor on our servers, which means that the only way to access your data is to enter your Master Password.
But once you've logged in, you can set up a PIN code so that you don't need to enter your Master Password every time you open the app.
About the auto-lock and Lock on exit settings
You can set a timer to your app so that it locks automatically after a certain period of inactivity. This is useful, especially in case your phone is stolen and you want to make sure no one can access your data. You can choose a time between 5 seconds and 15 minutes.
You could also disable this by selecting "Never", but we strongly discourage using this setting.
Lock on exit
If you've enabled this feature, then the app will automatically lock whenever you leave it. We recommend that you keep this setting on for more security.
You can find these two features in the Settings menu under Auto-lock.
