Dashlane Authenticator is an app for your mobile device that provides a simple way to turn on 2-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is an extra layer of security that you can add to your Dashlane account or important logins that need more protection—like bank accounts.

How does the Authenticator work?
You can use the Authenticator to protect your Dashlane account or other important logins. When you try to connect to an account protected by the Authenticator, we ask you for a 2FA token—a temporary 6-digit number stored in the Authenticator app. You need to open the app to find the token and then enter it on the login page of the account you're trying to log in to.
Note: The 6-digit numbers created by the Authenticator app are also called "time-based one-time passwords" (TOTPs), which means the tokens change automatically every 30 seconds.
Download the Authenticator
You can download the Dashlane Authenticator for your Android or iOS (Apple) mobile device. Android customers need Android 8 or later, and your device needs a camera and access to the Google Play Store. Apple customers need iOS 14 or later on their iPhone or iPad.

If you haven't already, we recommend downloading the main Dashlane app for your mobile device. The 2FA tokens you add in the Authenticator sync automatically to the Dashlane app on your mobile device, and you can access your tokens anywhere you use Dashlane.

Protect your Dashlane account with the Authenticator
You can use the Authenticator as an extra layer of security for your Dashlane account. Depending on your settings, we'll ask you to enter a 2FA token every time you log in to Dashlane or only when you log in on a new device.
Protect your Dashlane account with 2FA
Note: If you've downloaded the Authenticator but haven't set up 2FA for Dashlane, you receive a push notification in the Authenticator app when you log in to Dashlane on a new device. To complete the login process select the notification and then Accept. Select Reject instead if you weren't trying to log in to Dashlane on a new device. You can also open the Authenticator app to accept or reject the login.
Protect your important logins with the Authenticator
You can use the Authenticator to protect logins that need extra security—like bank accounts. You can use the Authenticator alone or with the main Dashlane app.
When you have both apps on your mobile device, you can add a 2FA token in either app, and the apps automatically sync so that you can find the token in both places. The tokens also sync to your Dashlane apps on all devices you use. For sync to work, you need to turn on Biometric unlock in the main Dashlane app.

Note: If you have two logins saved in Dashlane with the same website, Dashlane Authenticator asks which login you want to add your 2FA token to. You can also add a new login and save your token there.

Common questions
Can I use more than one authenticator app?
You can have more than one authenticator app installed on your device. But if you've turned on 2FA for your Dashlane account with another authenticator app and want to use the Dashlane Authenticator, you need to turn 2FA off and back on.
Can I use the Dashlane Authenticator on more than one device?
You can use the Authenticator to protect individual logins on as many devices as you want. The Authenticator app and the main Dashlane app sync automatically across devices, so you see the same tokens on all your devices.
However, to protect your Dashlane account with 2FA, you can only use the Authenticator on one device. Otherwise, you may have problems finding the tokens you use to log in to your Dashlane account.
You can switch the device you use as an authenticator to protect your Dashlane account anytime. You need to turn off 2FA for Dashlane on the device you're currently using and turn 2FA back on with the new device.
What if I already turned on 2FA for logins saved in the main Dashlane app?
When you download the Dashlane Authenticator app for your mobile device, the app syncs with the Dashlane app so that you can find your 2FA tokens in both places.
Can I edit 2FA tokens in the Dashlane Authenticator?
Yes, you can change a token's name in the Authenticator app. You can also change the website or app where you use the token or the username you use it with.
- In the Authenticator app, select the 3-dot menu and select Edit.
- Select the pencil icon next to the item you want to edit.
- Select the field you want to change, and make your changes.
- Select Save.
If you change the name, the new name will appear next to the token in the Authenticator app and the main Dashlane app. You can also select the star icon next to a token, which moves it to the top of the list on the main menu.
Can I delete 2FA tokens?
Only delete the 2FA tokens you use to log in to Dashlane if you've turned off 2FA for your Dashlane account. If you delete these tokens before turning off 2FA, you'll need to use recovery codes to access your account and turn off 2FA.
Use recovery codes to log in and turn off 2FA
You should also turn off 2FA for specific logins before deleting the corresponding 2FA token from your authenticator app. If you accidentally delete a 2FA token, contact the support team for the account to find out about recovery methods.
After you've turned off 2FA for a login, you should always delete the 2FA token for that login.
- In the Authenticator app, select the 3-dot menu and select Edit.
- Select the pencil icon next to the item you want to delete.
- Select Remove token.
- Confirm by selecting Yes, remove account.
What if I get an error message when I try to log in with a 2FA token?
You might get an error message for several different reasons.
If you've turned 2FA on and off several times for one of your accounts without deleting any tokens, you'll have several tokens for the same account saved in the Authenticator app. If you haven't given them unique names, the tokens will look the same except for the 6-digit number. Try each token to see which one works, and then delete the tokens that don't work.
Each token has a 30-second countdown timer showing how long you have before the app creates a new 6-digit number. If the countdown timer is low, wait for the token to refresh. Otherwise, you might get an error message because the token you used is no longer valid.
You can also get an error message if the time settings differ on your devices—the device with your Authenticator app and the device you're trying to log in on. Make sure both devices are set to the same time.
Is the Dashlane Authenticator a secure way to store my tokens?
Yes. The Dashlane Authenticator is part of Dashlane's zero-knowledge approach to security, meaning only you can access your data. Not even Dashlane can see what you store in our apps—including your passwords, payment info, and 2FA tokens.
