These instructions require your current Master Password to make a change. If you've forgotten your Master Password, check out our troubleshooting steps:
I forgot my Master Password
Members of professional plans who use single sign-on (SSO) don't have a Master Password to change. SSO means you use one login application to access Dashlane and other work accounts. Instead of a Master Password, you use your regular work password to log in to Dashlane. If you don't know whether you have SSO, ask your manager or plan admin.
Your Master Password is the only password you need to remember. The most important thing you can do to keep your account secure is to create a strong Master Password.
How does Dashlane measure password strength?
Cybercriminals who steal your data aren't trying to figure out your passwords—their computers are. They may obtain your passwords by automating brute-force attacks, a hacking method that uses trial-and-error to guess passwords.
If your Master Password could be easily worked out by someone else, Dashlane considers it weak.
Dashlane evaluates password strength against over 30,000 of the most common password types, including dictionary words, names, keyboard patterns, dates, and more. The open-source method Dashlane uses is called “ZXCVBN." ZXCVBN is the algorithm behind most password-strength meters you see when you create new passwords.
Although we don’t have specific requirements for your Master Password, the ZXCVBN algorithm assesses your password's security when you create it.
The algorithm searches for patterns that cybercriminals might use to guess the password and assigns a score from 0 to 4, with 4 being the strongest. A score of 2 or lower is considered weak and easy to guess. Dashlane will then suggest ways to strengthen the password, like an uncommon word.

You want a Master Password that's long, unique, and difficult to guess. If you think your Master Password is weak or easy to guess, you can change your password at any time. Remember to make your Master Password as strong as possible
More about the Dashlane Master Password
Before you start
When you change your Master Password, it changes across all the devices you use Dashlane on. Devices include phones, tablets, and each computer browser you use, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Brave, and Edge. Before you change your Master Password, review this information:
- Dashlane logs you out of all devices when you change your Master Password. You need to log in to each device with your new Master Password. We'll re-authenticate each device with a new verification code sent to the email address or phone number associated with your Dashlane account.
Use Dashlane on a new device - When you change your Master Password, your account recovery key becomes invalid. You need to generate a new key and store it in a safe place.
Set up your account recovery key - We also turn off the Biometric recovery setting when you change your Master Password. If you want to be able to reset your Master Password with your face or fingerprint, you need to turn on this setting again.
Reset your Master Password with biometric recovery on your mobile device - Before you create a new Master Password, we recommend that you back up your data in a secure DASH file. Then, if you forget your new Master Password, you have another way to recover your data.
Back up your data - If you use special symbols for added security, make sure you select symbols available on all devices you'll need to use to access Dashlane.
