Need to share a login with someone who doesn't use Dashlane? Skip the insecure plain-text emails and messages. With link sharing, you can collaborate with anyone by sending a temporary link to a login.
Link sharing is available to everyone with a personal plan. If you're a member of a professional plan, your admin must turn on link sharing. You can generate and share temporary links only from the Dashlane web app.
Link sharing benefits
- No setup required: Recipients view the login without creating an account or installing the Dashlane browser extension
- Simple sharing: Generate, copy, and share a link for any specific login
- Seamless experience: Recipients open the URL in any browser to access the username, password, 2FA codes, and notes
- Temporary access: Links expire after one view or 24 hours to ensure sensitive data remains active only as long as necessary
- At this time, you can’t change when the link expires, and you can’t revoke access after the link is sent
- Instant security: As soon as one of the default expiration conditions are met, the URL is revoked and becomes invalid
Prerequisite for professional plans: Admin turns on link sharing
Turn on link sharing
Link sharing is turned off by default. An admin must turn on link sharing before plan members can generate links. Then, members can share logins from the web app with freelancers, contractors, or vendors who don’t use Dashlane.
- In the Admin Console, select Policies.
On the Policies page, first make sure Allow sharing outside of the company is turned on. Then, turn on Enable link sharing.
All plans: Share a temporary link to a login
Anyone can share a login
Anyone can share a link to a login with people who don’t have Dashlane accounts. You can only share one login, which expires after 1 view or 24 hours by default, whichever comes first. At this time, you can’t change when the link expires.
When you share a link to a login, you’re sending the details that apply at that moment. If you make any updates to that login after you share the link, those updates won’t be reflected.
Important: Treat the generated link with the same caution as a password. Never post the link where unauthorized individuals can access it.
You can generate and share temporary links only from the Dashlane web app.
Reminder: An admin must turn on link sharing for professional plans before plan members can generate links.
- Open the login you want to share. Select Share.
In the How do you want to share? pop-up, select Send a link.
- The conditions for the recipient’s access to the shared item appear: 1 view or 24 hours, whichever comes first. At this time, you can’t change the conditions. Select Generate link.
In the Link created! pop-up, select Copy link, and send the link to the recipient.
Important: After you generate and send the link, you can’t cancel or delete it. The link will expire by default after 1 view or 24 hours. If you send a link by mistake, either open the link yourself to trigger the one-view expiration or change the password in your vault.
Recipient’s experience
Use a shared link
The recipient doesn’t need a Dashlane account or the browser extension to access the login information.
- Select the URL provided by the sender.
- The recipient is redirected to a browser landing page, verifies they’re human, and selects I accept in the Privacy Notice section.
- In the Someone shared an item with you pop-up, the username, password, and, if available, 2FA code and notes appear.
- The recipient must manually copy/paste the login details into the target website. Autofill won’t work for link sharing.
- Select the Copy icon, shown as two pieces of paper, to copy a detail
- Select the Show icon, shown as an eye, to reveal the password
- After the recipient views the login information or 24 hours pass, the link becomes invalid. Refreshing the page or future attempts to access the URL will result in an error.
Important: Even if the recipient has a Dashlane account, they can’t automatically save the login to their vault. Dashlane users also have to manually copy/paste the login information into the target website.
