What information is tracked or logged by the VPN?
The only information tracked is technical information related to your VPN connection that is needed to maintain performance and stability.
No history is kept of your browsing through the VPN. Additionally, Dashlane provides no identifiable information about our users to Pango, the providers of the technology behind our VPN.
Pango does not collect or retain any personal information from Dashlane’s users and therefore does not share any such data with third parties. Furthermore, Pango serves no advertisements and does not provide any advertising SDKs to its partners' applications.
Can I choose the location of the VPN server?
Yes, you can choose the location of the VPN server. The first time you use it, the VPN will default to the nearest available server, which is most often in the country you’re in at the time. For more information on how to choose the server location, read about setting up Dashlane's VPN.
Our list of servers is based on user demand. Additionally, our servers are located around the world to provide a quick and secure connection wherever our users are located. If we do not currently have servers in your country, we are sorry for the inconvenience.
We invite you to share this feedback with our Product team, who is constantly working to integrate user feedback into our roadmap for the application.
Can I use the VPN for peer-to-peer sharing?
Yes, but our VPN does not support port forwarding.
Does Dashlane use a third-party provider?
Dashlane uses Hotspot Shield technology to power the VPN. This means that your encrypted internet traffic is routed through servers hosted by our partner, Pango (provider of Hotspot Shield).
The VPN protocol used depends on your platform. On Android and Windows, the VPN protocol is OpenVPN, an open-source protocol. On Mac, the protocol is IPSec, an open-standard protocol. On iOS, the protocol is Catapult Hydra, a proprietary protocol developed by Pango.
Does the Dashlane VPN protect against DNS leaks?
Yes. All DNS requests are encrypted and made from within the VPN tunnel.
REQUIREMENTS AND AVAILABILITY
Are there any special system requirements to use the VPN?
If you are a Windows user, you must have administrator privileges for the VPN to launch.
For example, you are the administrator of your home computer by default, but you may not have this level of access to your work computer. Ask your system administrator for more information.
For all other platforms, the VPN has the same system requirements as the Dashlane application.
I'm using free Premium. Can I use the VPN?
The VPN is a Premium and Business plan feature with payment required to activate unlimited data usage within the feature. As such, the VPN is not available to free Premium or Premium/Business trial users.
As a business user, do I get to use the VPN?
The VPN is available for all Business plans but must be enabled by your plan's administrator after the initial free trial period.
Users on Dashlane Business plans have access to the VPN on mobile only.
What can I do if my email doesn’t work properly when I use the VPN?
If you use an email client such as Outlook or Thunderbird, where your emails are downloaded and managed locally, you might encounter problems sending emails.
Our VPN blocks traffic through the unsecured port 25 and instead uses encrypted communications through ports 587 or 465. If your email client uses port 25, please consult your internet service provider’s instructions to configure your email client to use other ports, such as 587 or 465, to send and receive email.
If changing the ports used by your email client does not solve the problem, please contact Dashlane Support.
Will the VPN slow down my internet connection?
Dashlane's VPN, like any VPN, might slow your internet connection in some cases. Several factors impact speed on the Internet when connecting through a VPN. For example:
- Connection traffic and stability
- Computer security settings and antivirus software
- The distance between you and the VPN servers
- Data encryption and decryption rate on your device
Does the VPN have a data bandwidth limit?
No. The VPN does not have a data bandwidth limit.
What happens if my network connection is interrupted? If I leave my current WiFi area, will the VPN connect to another network automatically?
If you are on Windows, Mac, or iOS and lose your network connection, the VPN will disconnect and not reconnect automatically. On Android devices, the VPN will reconnect automatically as soon as your device locates an available network.
What happens to the VPN connection if my device goes to sleep?
On iOS, the VPN will disconnect if the device goes to sleep. On all other platforms, the VPN connection is maintained.
If I close or log out of Dashlane, will the VPN disconnect?
If you close Dashlane, the VPN will not disconnect.
If you force-quit Danshlane on Windows, the VPN will disconnect. If you force-quit the application on Android, the VPN will sometimes disconnect.
If you log out of Dashlane on Windows, Mac, or Android, the VPN will disconnect.
Will my VPN connection ever time out?
Yes. Your VPN connection will not last more than 24 hours.
How do I confirm I'm connected to the VPN on my desktop?
You can see the VPN's connection status by going to the VPN menu in your Dashlane application. Here you can see whether you're connected to the VPN and for how long.
On Mac, the VPN option appears in the application menu at the top of your screen.
On Windows, the VPN option appears in the menu bar at the top of the application window.
How many devices can I connect to the VPN?
You can connect an unlimited number of devices to the VPN.
When I connect to the VPN, does it connect on all my devices at the same time?
No. The VPN connection is made individually on each device. For every device you want to connect to the VPN, you must set it up separately and connect or disconnect to the VPN.
Why is the VPN blocking my streaming website?
Some websites offering to stream movies and series, such as Netflix or HULU, don't work when connected to the Dashlane VPN.
This is a known issue with VPNs. Some streaming websites have taken anti-VPN measures to keep users from streaming content outside of their licensed regions. Unfortunately, neither we nor any other VPN provider has any control over these measures.
