How to import your passwords
First, to import your passwords using the web app, you will need to export the passwords as a .csv file from Chrome, Edge, Firefox, LastPass or 1Password. Then, find the exported file and securely import it into your Dashlane account.
Some new web app users will have already been invited to use this capability when they created their account. If wasn't suggested to you, you skipped it at the time, or you simply want to use the feature now, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Export your passwords into a .csv file
Whether your passwords are currently stored in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, LastPass, or 1Password, you should be able to export them into a .csv file.
If your passwords are stored elsewhere, you can try exporting them into a .csv file and format this file the same way as this template in order to be able to import them into Dashlane.
Clicking the name of your previous password management solution above will give you more information on how to export your passwords from there. Exporting passwords from Edge is actually very similar to how it is done in Chrome so you can click the Chrome hyperlink above if you need more information. It should also be very similar for Chromium based browsers such as Opera or Brave.
Step 2: Log in to your account on the web app
Please log in to the web app either by clicking https://app.dashlane.com/login or clicking the Dashlane extension in your browser's toolbar. If you go through the extension, you may have to go to the last tab of the extension window and click Open the app.
Step 3: Find and use the import feature
In the web app, click on the gear icon or My Account and then click Import Passwords.
Note that we'll soon be implementing other ways to access the import feature, making it even easier to find and use!
Step 4: Locate the .csv file for import and click "Upload"
Once you clicked any of the Import buttons, will appear a popup where you can either drag and drop the .csv file, or click browse your computer to locate and select the file. Once you located the file you want to import, please click the Upload button.
The import should only take a second or two, and then a notification will appear displaying how many passwords were imported into your vault.
At this point, you should see the imported passwords in your Vault. You're all set to start using Dashlane to securely autofill these passwords across the internet!
The import didn't work, what do I do?
The main reason the import sometimes does not work is the .csv file being incorrectly formatted, or in any case not being readable by Dashlane.
Note, in the .csv file that there should be no spaces before or after the commas.
In order to make sure the file is correctly formatted, we suggest that you download and use this template and either use the template as a reference for how to format your data, or else transfer your data into the template file itself.
Again, make sure the format of your data matches the examples in the file, and respect the order of the columns. The template is based on the default format used by Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, so it is the surest way to make sure it works.
Frequently asked questions
a. Can I import Safari/Keychain passwords?
Unfortunately not. As it is currently not possible to export Keychain passwords into a .csv file, Dashlane will not be able to import your Safari passwords.
The best workaround is to install the Dashlane extension in Safari on your macOS computer, make sure it is enabled and working, and then use the Keychain to autofill your information on your websites as you normally browse the web.
Each time Dashlane will detect a successful login, it will offer to save the login information in your Dashlane vault. This way, you'll transfer progressively all your most used Keychain passwords into Dashlane.
b. What kinds of data will be imported into Dashlane?
Dashlane can import the name, the URL, the login and the password for your credentials. It unfortunately does not currently import other types of data such as notes or categories.
c. Does this work in the web view as well?
Yes it does! Accessing https://app.dashlane.com/login from a browser where the Dashlane extension is not installed will open the web view instead of the web app, and the import feature is also available there. For example, this can be useful if your passwords are stored on your work computer but you cannot install the Dashlane extension there. You should be able to access the web view from anywhere you need.
