Your Master Password is what unlocks your Dashlane account. Only you know your Master Password, and it is never shared with or stored by Dashlane.
In the past, this meant that if you forgot your Master Password, your data in Dashlane could no longer be decrypted and the account needed to be reset to begin using Dashlane again.
But if you have biometrics activated for your Dashlane account on your Android or IOS device, you are now able to reset your Master Password with your biometrics. You will then be able to create a new Master Password and regain access to your account with no data loss.
Master Password reset with biometrics on Android
Who can use it
In order to be able to use this feature to recover your Master Password, you will have to have previously enabled it in the settings of the Dashlane app.
This feature is available to all Android users, Free, Premium, or Business, and who have a device that offers biometrics compatible with the Dashlane app.
If you are a Dashlane Business user with single sign-on (SSO) enabled, this feature will not be available to you, as you do not use a Master Password.
How to activate the feature
Please remember that, in order for you to enable the Reset Master Password with biometrics feature, you first need to have enabled "Biometric unlock" to log in to your Dashlane account. For more information on how to enable biometrics for your account, please have a look at the following article: How to set biometric authentication or a PIN code to unlock Dashlane on Android.
Once "Biometric unlock" is enabled for your account, you will be able to activate "Master Password reset" in the settings of your Dashlane app. To do so, please go to the Settings, then Security and enable Master Password reset.
Note that whenever a new fingerprint is added to the biometrics settings on your device, this automatically disables the biometric lock and the Master Password reset with biometrics feature. You will have to enter your Master Password at your next login and re-enable both features. This is done to ensure the security of your Dashlane account.
How to recover your Master Password
Once you have enabled the Master Password reset, and are prompted within the next 14 days to enter your Master Password, if you enter a wrong one you will be offered the option to "reset your Master Password."
Note that if you have 2FA or U2F enabled, you will still be able to use this feature, but must simply enter the code from your authenticator app or use your U2F key before continuing with the following flow.
Once you have tapped on "reset your Master Password," you must authenticate with biometrics.
And that's it. You will then be able to choose a new Master Password and recover your account!
For Premium users, after changing your Master Password you will need to re-authenticate all other devices with a new code when next logging in.
