You can quickly and securely unlock Dashlane in your browser without entering your Master Password each time. Learn how to turn on and use your fingerprint, called biometric authentication, or a security key to unlock your Dashlane web app.
Touch ID is also available for unlocking the Safari app.

Before you get started
Unlocking the web app using biometrics or a security key works with the last two major versions of the Chrome and Edge browsers. You can also use any other browser based on Chromium, such as Opera and Brave. If you're running Opera on a macOS device, you can unlock the app using only a security key, not biometrics.
You must also be running Dashlane version 6.2119 or later.
You can't unlock with biometrics if you have 2-factor authentication on for every login or you're a member of a Dashlane Business plan who logs in using single sign-on (SSO) instead of a Master Password.
If you're using Windows or macOS, you must have a device that supports fingerprint scanning or a security key compatible with FIDO2 and WebAuthn. If you're using Linux, you can unlock the app using only a security key, not biometrics.
Fingerprint authentication on Windows
If you've never used Windows Hello before, you must register your fingerprint in Windows Hello for it to work with Dashlane.
Register your fingerprint in Windows Hello
After you turn on fingerprint authentication on your PC, you can use Windows Hello to unlock the web app and the extension.
Touch ID on macOS
To make Touch ID available in Dashlane on your Mac, you first need to turn on Touch ID in your device settings.

After you turn on Touch ID for your device, you can use it to authenticate on the web app and the extension.

Security keys
Your security key must be compatible with FIDO2/WebAuthn. These models support FIDO2 and WebAuthn: YubiKey 5C NFC, YubiKey 5Ci, YubiKey 5 Nano, YubiKey 5C, YubiKey 5C Nano, and Security Key NFC by Yubico.
Set up biometrics
With biometric authentication, Dashlane can read your fingerprint and unlock the web app instead of asking you to enter your Master Password.
If you're a member of a Dashlane Business plan who logs in using single sign-on (SSO) instead of a Master Password, Dashlane asks to unlock the extension and web app using SSO, not biometrics.
If you log out manually, Dashlane asks you to enter your Master Password to log in to your Dashlane account, and you'll have to re-enable the feature.
In addition, you'll need to enter your Master Password from time to time as a security measure and to make sure that you remember your password.

FAQ about unlocking the web app
Limitations of unlocking the web app
Turn on the fingerprint scanner on Windows and macOS
After you've enabled Windows Hello on your Windows device or Touch ID on your macOS device, you can set up biometric authentication to unlock your Dashlane account on the web app and extension.
Turn on "Local unlock" in Dashlane
After you turn on biometrics for your device, turn on Local unlock in the app.
- Log in to the Dashlane extension and select Open the web app.
- In the My account menu, select Settings and then Security settings.
- Turn on Local unlock, enter your Master Password, and select Unlock.
- In the Turn on local unlock pop-up, select Add unlock method.
- In the next pop-up, follow these steps for your device:
- On a Windows device, select More choices and then Fingerprint. Place your finger on the scanner when prompted.
- On a macOS device, select Continue and then place your finger on the scanner when prompted.
- Select Done.
If you use more than one device, repeat this process for each browser or device.
Set up your security key
If you have a security key compatible with FIDO 2 and WebAuthn, you can turn on the Security key setting to unlock the web app.
Turn on the Security key setting
To turn on the Security key setting, start by inserting your key. If the setting doesn't appear in the pop-up, select More choices on a Windows device or Try another way on a macOS device.
- Log in to the Dashlane extension and select Open the web app.
- In the My account menu, select Settings and then Security settings.
- Turn on Local unlock, enter your Master Password, and select Unlock.
- In the Turn on local unlock pop-up, select Add unlock method.
- In the next pop-up, select Security key.
- In the Security key setup pop-up, select OK. Then enter your security key PIN and select OK again.
- Touch your security key to complete the setup.
- Select Done.
If you use more than one device, repeat this process for each browser or device.
Turn on a second unlock method on the same browser or device
- Log in to the Dashlane extension and select Open the web app.
- In the My account menu, select Settings and Security settings.
- In the Local unlock section, select View options.
- Select + next to Unlock methods and then enter the required information or place your fingerprint on the fingerprint scanner, depending on which method you've already added.
Dashlane names the new method "Biometric 2" and renames the previously-added method "Biometric 1."
Unlock the app
Now you can unlock Dashlane using fingerprint authentication or a security key instead of entering your Master Password.
Dashlane asks you to place your finger on the fingerprint scanner or enter the security key, depending on your method.
If you have more than one method added on the same browser or device, Dashlane asks you to scan your fingerprint by default. You can also log in with a security key:
- On Windows, select the Security Key option
- On macOS, select Cancel, then USB security key. Enter your security key and select it.
After authenticating using the fingerprint scanner or the security key, Dashlane unlocks your account.
Important notes:
- You need to scan your fingerprint or plug in your security key within 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, the authentication fails, and you're asked to try again.
- The option to log in with your Master Password is always available.
- If you manually log out of the extension, Dashlane turns off Local unlock. To avoid this, close your browser. Closing your browser logs you out of your Dashlane account and keeps the feature enabled when you open your browser again.
- If authentication fails, the system might ask for a password. This password isn't your Dashlane Master Password but the session password for your device.
Lock the extension
After you turn on local unlock, you can lock the extension anytime. While your extension is locked, you can't access your data in the web app or extension pop-up. We'll also stop autofilling your information until you unlock the extension.
To lock the extension, select the Dashlane D in your browser toolbar to open the extension. Then select More and Lock. You can also lock the extension from the web app by opening the My account menu and selecting Lock.
Note: You won't see the option to lock your extension unless you turn on local unlock.
Turn off the unlock methods
- Log in to the Dashlane extension and select Open the web app.
- In the My account menu, select Settings and then Security settings.
- Turn off Local unlock and enter your Master Password if prompted.
If you have more than one method enabled for that device or browser and you want to remove only one of them, follow these steps:
- Log in to the Dashlane extension and select Open the web app.
- In the My account menu, select Settings and then Security settings.
- In the Local unlock section, select View options.
- Select the 3-dot menu next to the method you want to remove and select Delete.
