I thought Dashlane was going to be a web-first product. Is the Dashlane macOS app another desktop app?

The Dashlane macOS app opens in its own window on your computer desktop, rather than in a browser tab. The macOS app is available for macOS computers and works independently of the extension. The macOS app and the extension are installed together from the App Store. You can use the macOS app alongside the extension if you choose.

Our goal is to continue providing the best possible experience for our customers who use Safari, which is why we've released the Dashlane extension for Safari. The extension incorporates all the recent autofill improvements available on Chrome and Firefox, while still providing an Apple-native experience.

What does Dashlane look like on the macOS app?

You'll find that the Dashlane macOS app workflows are similar to the workflows when you use the Dashlane app on the iPad. Open the Dashlane macOS app from your computer's Applications folder, the Launchpad, or from the dock if you moved it.

In the Dashlane macOS app, you can access your Logins, Secure Notes, Payments, Personal Info, and IDs from the left menu. You can also check your Password Health, set up Collections, and share items in your vault.

Select the gear icon at the top of the left menu to open the Settings screen. From Settings, you can update your contact email address, set up your account recovery key, manually log out of Dashlane, and more.

The Dashlane extension for Safari improves your online experience. An extension—also called a plug-in or an add-on—is a small program you install to add features to your computer browser.

From the extension pop-up, use the shortcuts to open the web app, sync your devices, and access our Help Center. You can also manage your logins and other data, access autofill settings, and use our Password Generator. The extension is optional, but it reduces your need to use the Dashlane macOS app. With the extension, you can use more Dashlane features and tools right in your browser.

What does Dashlane look like in the extension?

If you have the Safari extension installed, select the Dashlane D gray icon next to the Safari address bar to open the extension pop-up.

In the extension pop-up, you have two menus near the top to access your data, change your autofill settings, and generate passwords or passphrases. At the bottom of the pop-up, select Open the web app to open the app in a new browser tab for more features.

The Safari extension and web app work the same way as the extension and web app in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Chromium-based browsers, such as Opera and Brave. When you have the Safari extension installed, you can use any instructions you find for the extension or the web app.

The Dashlane extension for Safari is available for macOS devices using Sequoia (macOS 15.0) or later.

To use the extension, you'll need to update to the latest version of macOS. Apple always offers free upgrades to the latest version of macOS, which can be installed on most Mac computers.

If you can't update your OS now, we know it's not ideal, but you'll need to install and use the extension on another compatible browser.

If you use Chrome and Firefox, you can access Dashlane with the web app.

Limitations

Follow these steps to turn on the Dashlane extension for Safari:

1. Select Safari in the Safari browser toolbar and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.
2. In the window, select Extensions in the top menu.
3. Select the checkbox for Dashlane and clear the checkboxes for any other Dashlane extensions if they appear.
4. If you have autofill turned on for Safari, you need to turn it off for Dashlane autofill to work:
   1. Select Safari in the Safari browser menu bar and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.
   2. In the window, select AutoFill in the top menu.
   3. Clear the checkboxes.
5. You must also accept permission requests to grant the extension access to all websites. Allow access either directly in the Safari Settings in the Extensions section or from the extension pop-up.
6. When you open the extension, you need to log in again.
7. You also need to verify the new device when you log in to the extension by entering a verification code sent to your email or the token from your 2FA app. Copy the link to enter the verification code instead of selecting the link in the email.

When you create your Dashlane account, you'll go through our onboarding checklist. Then you'll choose the Safari extension for your Dashlane experience.

1. Install the Dashlane app from the Mac App Store

   Note: Only install Dashlane from official sources, such as the App Store.

2. Open the Dashlane app and create a new account. You're guided through the process with our onboarding checklist.
3. The extension isn't enabled by default. We recommend that you turn on Dashlane for the best autofill experience:
   1. Select Safari in the Safari browser menu bar and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.
   2. In the window, select Extensions in the top menu.
   3. Select the checkbox for Dashlane and clear the checkboxes for any other Dashlane extensions if they appear.
   4. You must also accept permission requests to grant the extension access to all websites. Allow access either directly in the Safari Settings in the Extensions section or from the extensions pop-up.
