You can turn on 2-factor authentication (2FA) to add extra protection to important logins stored in Dashlane. After you turn on 2FA for a login, you'll be asked to enter a 6-digit 2FA token from Dashlane when you log in to that account.
Not all websites and apps can use Dashlane for 2FA. Some websites and apps require you to use a specific authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, or to receive 2FA tokens by email or text message.
Tip: If you don't have a mobile device, you can turn on 2FA and view tokens in your computer's web browser.

Overview: 2FA in Dashlane
Turn on 2FA for a login in your web browser
Before you start, open Dashlane in a browser other than Safari. This process doesn't work in Safari. It also doesn't work for websites and apps that require a mobile device to receive 2FA tokens.
Start setup in Dashlane
- In your web browser, open the login you want to protect with 2FA.
-
In the Login details section, select Set up 2FA token. A box opens where you'll add the 2FA setup code from the website.
Get the setup code from the website
-
Go to the security settings of the website. Security settings often appear in the Logins and Security or Account security section of your account settings.
Note: Some websites refer to 2FA as 2-step verification or 2-step authentication. They might also refer to a 2FA token as a code, a security code, or a one-time password (OTP). The support site for the login you want to protect usually has more information on enabling 2FA.
-
Turn on 2-factor authentication. Some websites don't show the setup code right away. Instead, they ask whether you want tokens by text or with an authenticator app.
Select the authenticator app option to see the setup code. You don't need an authenticator app to finish setup. You'll finish in Dashlane in your web browser.
Some websites show a link to the setup code instead, such as Can't scan the barcode? or Can't scan the QR code? Select the link to show the setup code.
-
Copy the setup code, a long string of letters and numbers from the website. The website might call it a manual setup code, key, authenticator key, or another name. If a QR code appears, ignore it. The QR code is for setting up 2FA on a mobile device.
Add the setup code in Dashlane
- In Dashlane, paste the code in the login's 2FA setup code box. Then select Submit setup code at the bottom of the box.
-
Close the login page and reopen it. The 6-digit 2FA token appears with a countdown icon. Each token is valid for about 30 seconds, and the countdown icon shows when a new token will appear. To copy the token, select the Copy icon, shown as two pieces of paper.
Note: If you get an error message when you use a 2FA token, wait for the next token and copy that one. Sometimes a token doesn't appear long enough for you to copy and paste it.
-
Return to the website. If it asks for a 2FA token to finish setup, paste the token you copied. Be sure to copy your backup or recovery codes if the website provides them.
To test your new extra layer of security, log out of the website and log in again.
