How to set up Touch ID or PIN code lock in Dashlane

With Touch ID or PIN code lock, you can quickly and securely unlock Dashlane and use Dashlane in your browsers without having to type your Master Password. This article explains how to use these simple security features.

How to enable Touch ID or PIN code lock

In your iPhone or iPad settings (Touch ID only) 

In order to make Touch ID available in Dashlane, you will first need to enable it in your iPhone or iPad’s device settings. If you are not already using Touch ID to unlock your iOS device, the option will not work in Dashlane.

In the Dashlane application

From the main menu, tap on Settings in the bottom right corner, then tap on Security.

There, enable either Use Touch ID or Use PIN code.

If you choose Use PIN code, you will be asked to enter and confirm your 4-digits PIN code.

No matter what feature you enable, your Master Password will be securely stored on your device.

Note that Touch ID and PIN code lock cannot be both enabled at the same time. You will be forced to disable one if you wish to enable the other.

If you experience any problem enabling Touch ID or PIN code lock, disable them in Dashlane and attempt to enable them again. As far as Touch ID is concerned, you can also disable and re-enable it in your iOS settings.

How to use Touch ID or PIN code lock

Once one of these features has been enabled, they will replace your Master Password as your preferred authentication method, either to sign in to the app or to use Dashlane in Safari and Chrome, for instance.

Simply press your finger lightly on the Home button of your device to use Touch ID, or enter the chosen PIN code.

If Touch ID fails to recognize your finger, you will be asked to try again. After three unsuccessful attempts, you will need to enter your Master Password.

Only if you enabled Two-Factor Authentication in Dashlane: Touch ID cannot be used to unlock the Dashlane extension in Safari if you have enabled Two-Factor Authentication in your Dashlane account and selected the second option, i.e., ask a code each time you log into Dashlane.

In this case, you need to enter both your master password and a valid code from your Two-Factor Authentication app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Authy, FreeOTP) to unlock the Dashlane extension in Safari.

This does not apply if you selected the first option when you enabled Two-Factor Authentication in Dashlane, and thus only need a code when you add a new device to your account.

Advanced settings

You can find these two features in the Security menu, and will find that they work particularly well with either Touch ID or PIN code lock.

Auto-lock timeout

You can set a timer to your app so that it locks automatically after a certain period of inactivity. This is especially useful if your phone is stolen and you want to make sure no one can access your data. You can choose a time between 10 seconds and 10 minutes. After this time period, you will have to use either Touch ID or your PIN code to unlock it. You could also disable this by selecting Never, but we don't recommend this setting as it's not perfectly secure.

Lock on exit

If you've enabled this feature, then the app will automatically lock whenever you leave it (when going back to the Home screen on iOS, when switching between apps or when locking the screen). We recommend that you keep this setting on as it provides more security.

How can I change my PIN code?

If you ever want to change your PIN code, go to SettingsSecurity, then tap on Change PIN code. You will be prompted to enter a new four-digit PIN. You can also disable your PIN code here by sliding the button next to Use PIN code.

If your PIN code is not being accepted on your iOS device, you can easily fix it by following these steps:

  • Make 3 wrong PIN code attempts so that Dashlane asks your Master Password instead
  • Once logged in to the app, go to SettingsSecurity (refer to screenshots above if needed)
  • Disable the Use PIN code feature
  • Re-enable the feature 
  • You will be asked to set a new PIN code

Once that is done, your PIN code should work properly.

Does Touch ID or PIN code lock replace my Master Password completely?

Touch ID is an efficient and secure way to lock and unlock your device and its apps. It basically represents a substitute to the PIN code lock. Instead of entering your PIN – or your Master Password if you did not enable PIN protection – to unlock Dashlane, Touch ID can read your fingerprint and unlock the app.

However, your account data remains encrypted with your Master Password in Dashlane. This means that after restarting your device, you will be prompted to enter your Master Password to open Dashlane and decipher your data. In addition, your Master Password is also required every 14 days as a security protection and to make sure that you remember it. You will also be prompted for your Master Password if you manually log out of Dashlane.

You always need to put in your Master Password the first time you launch the app, because it is required to decipher your data. This is because your data is ciphered and cannot be read unless they are deciphered with your Master Password. Your Master Password is neither stored in the application nor on our servers, which means that the only way to access your data is to enter your Master Password. But once you've logged in, you can set up Touch ID or a PIN code so that you don't need to enter your Master Password every time you open the app.

Touch ID and PIN code lock cannot replace your Master Password completely; you will still need to type your Master Password occasionally.
