Accounts protected by a PIN are a form of passwordless login. These accounts are easy and convenient, and more secure than previous methods of protecting your account.
Traditionally, you prove your identity when you log in to an account by entering a password. But passwords come with important risks:
- Cybercriminals can steal your password in security breaches or phishing attacks
- Others can potentially guess your password, especially if it's simple
- A complex password can be hard to remember and cause you to lose access to your accounts if you forget it
An account protected by a PIN avoids these problems in two ways:
- You use a device-specific PIN to access your account. In certain situations, you can also set up your face or fingerprint to access your account. Your PIN is easy to remember and, with your face or fingerprint, you don't have to remember anything. So you're unlikely to get locked out of your account and lose data.
- But your PIN, face, and fingerprint only work on the device where you set them up. So accessing the account illegally—through a security breach or as part of a phishing attack—is extremely difficult.
Tip: For added security, choose a PIN for Dashlane that’s different from the PIN you use to log in to your phone or computer. Always make sure to lock your app when you're not using it.
