Dashlane on the web and the browser extension are the versions of Dashlane you use in your computer browser.
With Dashlane on the web and the browser extension, you can securely store your logins and other data, then autofill that information as you browse.
To get started, install the Dashlane browser extension. An extension is a small program you install to add features to your browser. Extensions appear as small icons next to the field where you enter web addresses.
Note: If you use a tablet or phone, you don't need the Dashlane browser extension. Everything you need is in the Dashlane app on your tablet or phone.
Step 1: Get the Dashlane browser extension for your favorite browser
You can also view, copy, and generate passwords or passphrases directly in the extension pop-up when you select the Dashlane D icon in your browser toolbar.
From the extension, you can open Dashlane on the web to view additional vault details and manage stored items. Dashlane opens in a full browser window with access to all features.
When you first open Dashlane on the web, you're prompted to add your first login. You can also open Logins in the side menu and import your logins at once, or add them one by one.

Is the browser extension secure?
Dashlane on the web and the browser extension protect your data with device and browser authentication. "Authentication" means you prove that you're the owner of your Dashlane account.
To authenticate your device and browser, Dashlane runs a security check. Then, you enter the temporary code Dashlane sends to the email address you used to set up your account. You have 15 minutes to enter the code. Finally, enter your Master Password or PIN, or use your security key to log in.
Important: If you choose to log in with a Master Password, the most important thing you can do to keep your account secure is to create a strong Master Password. You want a Master Password that's long, unique, difficult to guess, and easy to remember. To ensure the security and privacy of your data, we don't have a traditional "reset password" process like other websites and apps. No one at Dashlane knows your Master Password, and we can't send your password to you if you forget it.
You can also add an extra layer of security to the web version with Dashlane security tools, such as 2-factor authentication (2FA).

Step 1: Get the Dashlane browser extension for your favorite browser
Dashlane may not work in China due to Chinese data privacy laws.
The Dashlane browser extension is officially available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. You can also use Dashlane in Chromium-based browsers, such as Opera and Brave. If you use a Linux or a Chromebook device, you can only use Dashlane with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Only install Dashlane from official sources, such as the Chrome Web Store, the Firefox Add-ons page, or the App Store.

If you've pinned the extension to your browser toolbar, the Dashlane D is green when you're logged in.
The Dashlane D is orange when you're not logged in. You need to log in first to access the web version.
For Safari, the Dashlane D is blue when you're logged in and gray when you're not logged in.
Step 2: Create or log in to your Dashlane account
Follow these steps to create a Dashlane account protected by a Master Password. But you can also create a secure Dashlane account protected with a device-specific PIN or a security key.

After you install the extension in your browser, you can create a new Dashlane account or log in to your existing account.
For Safari: You need to log in separately to the Safari extension and the Dashlane macOS app, and verify each device individually. Self-hosted SSO isn't available in the Safari extension due to Apple limitations, so sign in through the macOS app instead.
Create or join a Dashlane account
If you're a member of a Dashlane professional plan with SSO enabled, this section doesn't apply to you, as you don't have a Master Password. SSO means you use one login application to access Dashlane and other work accounts. Instead of a Master Password, you use your regular work password to log in to Dashlane. If you don't know whether you have SSO, ask your manager or plan admin.
When you create a new Dashlane account, you need to provide a login email address, verify your email, and then create your Master Password.
If you want to join a professional plan, first accept the invite in your email instead.

Login and contact email addresses
Your login email address is the address you use to create your Dashlane account and the address you use to log in to your Dashlane account.
If you log in to your Dashlane account with a Master Password and aren’t part of a professional plan, you can change your login email address on the web. Admins of professional plans in which plan members log in with a Master Password can change the login email for any plan member.

Note: The ability to change your login email on passwordless and SSO accounts will be available in the future.
You also have a contact email address. Dashlane automatically uses your login email address as your contact email address, but you can provide a different contact email address.
Make sure you have access to the inbox for your contact email address. Based on your security settings, Dashlane sends verification codes to that address. Verification codes expire after 15 minutes. Dashlane uses these codes to check your identity when you change your Master Password, add new devices to Dashlane, or use your account recovery key.

When you create a Dashlane account, you can choose to log in with a Master Password. Only you know your Master Password, and Dashlane never shares or stores your password.
Your Master Password is the only password you need to remember when you use Dashlane.

Warning: If you forget your Master Password and haven't turned on a recovery method, you can lose the data you’ve stored in Dashlane. To ensure the security and privacy of your data, we don't have a traditional "reset password" process like other websites and apps. - Select the Dashlane D in your browser’s toolbar or extension menu, and select Create an account.

Enter the email address you want to use for your account. Select Continue.

A new tab opens to perform a security check, which helps prevent phishing. This security check confirms that the request is genuine, so attackers can't fake the process or trick you into a fraudulent request on a fake website.
Then, enter the verification code sent by email. You have 15 minutes to enter your code and complete the process.
For Safari: Safari doesn't open deep links from Dashlane emails correctly. Copy the verification link rather than select the link directly in the email. Then, paste the link into the browser tab that the extension opened.
If the page doesn't load or takes too long to load, turn off your ad blocker or VPN, or add Dashlane to your allowlist. If you're unable to receive your verification code, check this article:
- On the Choose how you protect your account page, select Create a Master Password.

Reminder: Dashlane can't send you your Master Password if you forget it.
Tip: If you use special symbols in your Master Password for added security, choose symbols available on all your devices. Some symbols may not work on mobile.

You can turn on one or more of the account recovery options available to you, such as the recovery key, face or fingerprint recovery, and admin-assisted recovery. Then, if you do forget your Master Password, you can gain access again and reset your Master Password.

If you created your Dashlane account on a mobile device or in a different browser, you'll need to verify your account the first time you log in on the web. This extra step confirms that the account belongs to you. Enter your Master Password, then complete the verification step to continue.
- Select the orange Dashlane D icon in your browser toolbar. The extension pop-up opens. Select Log in.

After you've logged in to Dashlane, the Get Started page appears with an onboarding checklist.
Add logins to Dashlane
If you previously stored your passwords and login details in a browser or another password manager, you can import your data directly into Dashlane. You don't need to enter information manually. Visit this article for the ways you can import content:

From the Get started page, select Add your first login as you browse, and a list of some popular websites appears. Select the website you want to start with.

Select Open selected website. If you're already logged in to the website, log out. When you log in again, a pop-up appears and asks if you want to save to Dashlane.

Select Save. If Dashlane already has information saved for this site, a pop-up appears. Choose whether to update the login with this new password or create a new login for this website.

Select Try autofill on the Get started page. Select Store personal info to continue.

Dashlane asks you to enter basic details that websites might ask you for, such as your name, date of birth, and phone number. Enter your information and select Continue.

Select Save and then Continue.

On the next screen, you can test autofill. The Dashlane D appears in each field. Select one of the fields. In the pop-up, select the data you entered, and Dashlane will autofill the information. Select Done.
For Safari: Autofill in Safari works for forms, payments, and personal information, and includes the in-field Password Generator for strong passwords or passphrases. A few differences apply:

Safari doesn't support copy and paste pop-ups for vault information. Use the right-click menu instead to autofill your username, password, payment information, or other vault data in any field.
- Autofill doesn't work for Basic Authentication login forms in Safari.
- AI-Powered Scam Protection and AI phishing alerts for fake sites aren't available in Safari.
Add your mobile device to Dashlane
You can add Dashlane to your mobile device from the Get started page. This step is optional, and you can complete it at any time.
- Select Get the mobile app.
- On the next screen, scan the QR code with your mobile device.
If you have issues, select It's not working for some tips. After you scan the code, follow the steps on your mobile device to install the Dashlane app.

Log in to the Dashlane mobile app. If you turn on biometrics and Biometric recovery in the mobile app, you can reset your Master Password with your fingerprint or face.

Any workarounds needed for the Safari extension?
Safari 17 or later supports deep links and redirects, such as Dashlane email links with device verification codes, sharing requests, plan information, and Admin Console links.
- Workaround: Open the link from the Dashlane email directly in the extension, then manually enter the code shown in the email.
What are the Safari extension's limitations and unavailable features?

- You need to log in separately to the Safari extension and the Dashlane macOS app.
- Self-hosted SSO isn't available in the Safari extension due to Apple limitations. Sign in through the Dashlane macOS app instead.
- You can't use Touch ID to unlock the Safari extension. Biometric credentials must be tied to a consistent extension ID, and the extension ID changes each time you reload your browser.
